Living rooms are often multi-functional: They need to provide for everyday needs of a family and still be special and gracious enough for guests. When arranging living room furniture, consider first the function or use the room. If the family watches television in the room, you can comfortably accommodate that need and still create a layout that's conducive to adult relaxation and conversation.

Playroom Furniture Storage

One of the biggest mistakes made in living room or family room furniture arrangement is to line up all the furniture against the walls. Some designers call this 'circling the wagons'. It might have been good for protection on the wagon trains in the Old West, but it does nothing to make a room welcoming.

Playroom Furniture Storage

Here are step-by step suggestions for creating living room looks that are stylish, functional and welcoming.

1. Ban the clutter: Stacks of newspaper and magazines and toys strewn across the floor won't make even the most beautiful furniture look good. Teach the kids to pick up their toys or designate another room as the playroom. A nostalgic blanket chest can serve as hidden away storage for a multitude of sins. An armoire or media storage system can house a television and provide space for other electronics. Media collections that are sold as individual units can be combined to create customized storage for all your components, as well as DVDs, CD, books and decorative items.

2. Move it out: Even a professional interior designer does not like to rearrange furniture in a room full of furniture. If possible move it into an adjacent room so that you can start with a blank slate. Or, draw your room to scale of graph paper, include locations and sizes of window and doors. Then draw scaled squares on colored paper to represent your furniture and cut them out. Now you can play with different configurations of furniture on paper.

3. Move it in: Starting with your biggest pieces of furniture, start moving them back into the room. Allow at least 18 inches of space between the coffee table and other pieces of furniture. Walkways should be at least two feet wide. For conversation, pieces of furniture should face each other and be close enough for people to hear each other in a normal tone of voice. Try using an area rug to 'anchor' a conversational area. If your living room is large, you may be able to create a TV viewing area on one end of the room and a conversation nook on the other.

Keep spaciousness as your goal and think outside the box. The best furniture arrangement may not be along the square lines of the room, but on an angle. This type of an arrangement may give the illusion of more space and also feel more welcoming. Occasional chairs and side tables may work well if placed on an angle to the larger furniture.

4. Let it go: When you are happy with the basic arrangement, start bringing accessories back into the room. Keep items that work with your decorative scheme. If something doesn't work, let it go; use it elsewhere, sell it or give it away. Try bringing in items that might be in other rooms of the house. For example, you may find that an area rug in a bedroom is the perfect size and style for your new living room.

Don't be afraid to experiment with what you already have to create a totally new and stylish place that works as well for family as it does for friends and guests.
